Dozens of Uber drivers in Berks County are spending their New Year's Eve sitting in parking lots and on street corners, waiting for alerts.

"Overall people are generally trying to be safe, and they know it's not smart to have a few drinks and go out and drive," Uber driver Jarrod Rabold said.

"i just expect it to be busy," Uber driver Fallon Skinner said. "I think people will be taking Ubers to parties, I also think if they're drinking they'll be calling Ubers."

Things got off to a slow start.

"No partying yet, people coming home from work, some people coming home with their groceries, pork and sauerkraut of course," Rabold said.

However, drivers expect it to be one of their busiest nights of the year. They say there are strategies for making the most of the holiday, when prices can surge.

"We try and stay in what that area of surge is the red area on the map, I've seen them all the way up to seven times normal pricing," Rabold said. "…[it's] still cheaper than a DUI."

Rabold spent the early evening hours waiting for calls in the West Reading area, with plans to move to other spots to drive people home from their celebrations after midnight.

"You can generally have more fun a little more drinks, you know the Uber drivers are gonna get you home safe," Rabold said.

Katie Broskey and her friends say they plan on spending most of the evening at Building 24 Kitchen and Bar. They're taking an Uber to and from their dinner.

"It's great and easy," Broskey said. "…[it's the] safest way too because we plan on having dinner and drinks."

As the countdown to 2019 begins, Broskey says her priority is staying safe, while still having a good time ringing in the new year.

"Drinking and driving is terrible, Uber is so easy, use the app, wait for the driver to come, safe way to travel," Broskey said.
