Sick of surge pricing on Uber and Lyft? Here are some tips to steer clear

Super Bowl Sunday is fast approaching, and for those of you planning to order a ride from Uber or Lyft, you may experience surge pricing.

Surge pricing is when ride share companies raise the cost of a ride because a lot of customers are ordering cars from the same area.

Some customers opt to pay for the convenience, but if you don’t want to, there are ways to avoid the price hike.

KOMO News spoke to Harry Campbell, founder of The Rideshare Guy, who offered the following tips for riders.

  1. Compare prices across Uber and Lyft. Campbell says, in his experience, Lyft tends to provide a better price during surge times, but that can vary. He recommends an app called Bellhop, which compares ride share options to a specific location in real time.
  2. Check the other ride options within Uber and Lyft. When the standard ride option surges, sometimes the other options offer a better deal. Pool is typically the cheapest ride, so if all options are surging, pool could keep the cost down. But Campbell recommends checking the luxury options as well. Sometimes you can get a nicer ride for a cheaper price during surge times.
  3. Wait a few minutes or walk a few blocks. Surge prices are specific to the area and time, since it’s a reflection of demand for rides in the moment. So if you walk a few blocks, you may find an area with a lower surge price. And sometimes waiting a few minutes allows the surge to drop.
  4. Sign up as a driver. Campbell admits this is an extreme option, but he says he has met passengers who sign up to drive simply to get access to Uber or Lyft’s surge map. That way they can see which areas are surging and which can save a rider a few bucks.
